Intralogistics, internal material handling, and inventory management can pose a challenge for any company. Setting up a system can consume a great deal of resources and energy if the ecosystem is not planned properly and with the utmost care. This can lead to numerous errors, causing companies to prefer traditional methods, even though these can also present significant obstacles. Yet technologies are now available on the market that enable companies to efficiently manage their material handling processes. Operations can be carried out more simply, transparently, and automatically; János Pesti, IT Director at Antra ID, discussed these solutions on the NEWtechtalk program.

During the broadcast, the expert emphasized that RFID technology is an umbrella term referring to radio-frequency identification. The technology can be classified into several categories. Low-frequency (LF) technology is generally used for animal identification, high-frequency (HF) technology is most commonly used for access cards, while ultra-high-frequency (UHF) technology is used for tracking logistics processes.

The RFID Is Not a Magic Bullet

“We have nearly a decade of practical experience with UHF technology,” emphasized János Pesti. “When tracking containers and vehicles, this method fully meets the requirements, as we can set up detection points without disrupting the logistics process. This makes data collection virtually invisible, while providing accurate information in both space and time.”

According to the expert, RFID technology cannot be implemented without a clear concept. Often, factors that appear as requirements can, with proper organization, allow for the implementation of a system using simpler technology. RFID is an option that complements the existing ecosystem. Antra ID typically favors hybrid concepts, which offer sufficient flexibility, making them easy to develop, while also ensuring the appropriate level of automation.

Goals in the Automation of Intralogistics Processes

There is often discussion about the extent to which intralogistics processes can be automated and where the limits of this automation lie. He sees the answer to this question in the fact that companies need to develop a medium- and long-term strategy in which they define the direction they want to take and the steps they intend to take. The expert added:

“It’s okay if this goal is forward-looking, because in that case we break the process down into several phases. First, we implement phase one, then phase two, and finally phase three. However, I see that companies often lack up-to-date, real-time, high-quality data on which to base such a long- or medium-term strategy. RFID technology should primarily be extended to processes that are profitable and offer a clear return on investment. When an automation project is launched, numerous aspects must be taken into account.”

In his view, for a company to build its processes to a truly advanced level, data is the primary requirement. Based on this information, self-learning algorithms can operate; these are capable of pattern recognition and identifying various correlations, thereby enabling them to make predictions and prevent potential errors. “We are currently working with university teams on the implementation of artificial intelligence technology; they are developing the algorithms, while Antra ID supports the effort by collecting data.”
